Abstract

, 1999). Even though this enumeration technique is fairly simple and easy to perform, care should be taken as certain factors such as the presence of nonbacterial biomass or debris, if not eliminated or minimised, may influence cell counts and hence affect the reliability of resulting data. Flow cytometry could be regarded as a more reliable approach for the enumeration of microorganisms. LIVE/DEAD BacLight™ Bacterial Kits (Molecular Probes, 1995) are used in flow cytometric analysis to investigate the microbiological effects of the two fluorochromes, SYTO 9 and propidium iodide.
