Water Wheel - Sep/Oct 2008 Supplement
Abstract
S A N I T A T I O N 2 0 0 8 NGO launches sanitation animation U K-based non-governmental organisation WaterAid has launched a three-dimensional animated film illustrating the disease burden that comes with open defecation, and what communities in Bangladesh are doing to address the issue. Using still photography to bring the issue of sanitation to life, ‘Ten Steps to Total Sanitation’ shows how sanitation works at the rural or small town community level. The animation is set in rural Bangladesh and is expected to be a useful tool for raising awareness, inspiring local partners working in the field and educating students. The short film outlines the problems caused by open defecation and specifies ten steps that communities can take to achieve ‘open defecation free status’, leading to a reduction in disease. It attempts to crystallise WaterAid’s approach to community-led sanitation and simplify a sometimes complex subject matter.
