Abstract
The international competition aims to encourage young people’s interest in issues concerning water and the environment. The award, which attracts hundreds of entries from all over the world, is given annually for an outstanding water project by a young person or a small group of young people. South Africa hopes to reclaim the title it won in 2003 after narrowly losing out to Japan in 2004. The three South African winners, Pontso Moletsane, Motebele (Elvis) Moshodi and Sechaba Ramabenyane scored top marks from the judges for their invention, the nocturnal hydro minimiser, which uses light and moisture sensors to control irrigation while minimising water wastage.
