Abstract
WRC funds research into Eastern Cape estuaries Amajor water research programme has recently been launched in the Eastern Cape to ensure the improved protection of the province's precious estuaries. Among the aims of the programme, which will be financed by the Water Research Commission (WRC), is to protect and promote the sustainable use of estuaries, particularly in the development of tourism. Mr Piet Odendaal, Executive Director of the WRC, said the Eastern Cape is a province with relatively few resources, but tourism has the potential to stimulate economic development in this region. Most of the development potential is to be found along the Eastern Cape coastal region which boasts some 45 per cent of all the estuaries in South Africa.
