Groundwater exploration in the Wilgerivier Formation
Abstract
To attain the above objectives, boreholes in a portion of the Wilgerivier Formation (Fig. 1), on 32 farms were investigated. Aquifer type was the most important parameter studied. The results indicate that weathered diabase sills in the sedimentary rocks of the Wilgerivier Formation at a given depth and with a given resistivity value yield the most favourable results in terms of water quantity. Geophysical techniques, which can be used in an effective manner to exploit such aquifers, are the Schlumberger depth sounding technique, the electromagnetic EM-34 profiling technique and the magnetic technique.
