Abstract

Fluid Thoughts Fluid Thoughts South Africa – a global water capital World Water Day, 22 March 2017, was a special day in South Africa’s water history. This was when eThekwini was the venue for the launch of the 2017 United Nations (UN) World Water Development Report, as well as the announcement of the 2017 Laureate of the Stockholm Water Prize, two major annual water milestones. President Jacob Zuma, in his capacity as a member of the UN Secretary General’s Head of State Panel on Water, emphasised the need to join forces around the world in a race against time. That race is the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for water and sanitation. Universal access to safe water and improved sanitation by 2030, leaving no-one behind, is perhaps one of our most ambitious multilateral goals to date. And this is only the beginning. The UNFPA (UN Population Fund) estimates that the global population will exceed 9.7 billion by 2050.
