Abstract

2 April 1998 1147 Introduction All industries are increasingly required to reduce their impact on the environment. Adequate treatment of food processing effluents is assuming increasing importance, as this industry addresses the issue of responsible environmental management (Wayman, 1996). For the food industry this is frequently difficult as factors related to seasonal operation, changes in plant effluent characteristics due to the processing of different products, nutritional deficiencies and the location of food processing plants, heavily impact the treatment efficiency.
