Gariep - The dam that tamed the Great River
Published: 2010
Authors: Lani van Vuuren
Abstract
Water History E ngineers had studied the Orange River for potential water storage sites since the 1870s, however, until the construction of Gariep Dam (or Hendrik Verwoerd Dam as it was known before 1996) the only dam to have been constructed was Buchuberg, in the Northern Cape. At only 10,7 m high, this dam, constructed as a white poverty relief project in the 1930s, would be dwarfed by what was to become the country’s largest dam.
