SA Youth Water Prize
Abstract
The last word KZN girls awarded for special tea The South African National Youth Water Prize was awarded to three female learners from KwaZulu-Natal this year. The awards, aimed at enhancing learners’ interest in science and technology, went to Thobile and Thokozani Mbanjwa and Nompilo Mahlobo, all from Mehlokazulu Secondary School in Imbali Township, outside Pietermaritzburg, for their ‘plant tea’ concept, which uses an infusion of organic household waste from the kitchen and greywater to grow food gardens. Amidst entertainment from Imbubu Primary School, last year’s winner, Elvis Moshodi, spoke some words of encouragement to the girls who were to compete for the Stockholm Youth Water Prize, which has been won by South Africa twice in the last three years. Minister of Water Affairs & Forestry, Lindiwe Hendricks, pleaded with mothers to encourage especially their girls to apply their initiative and creativity and seek employment in the ‘scarce’ skills, such as engineering and science.
